Wine with a Pulse

Deux Punx — "Two Punks" in French — is one of California's most defiantly independent natural wine projects. [^42^] Founded in 2008 by Dan Schaaf and Aaron Olson (now joined by Kayne Guzowski), Deux Punx operates from a shared roll-up garage in the River East neighborhood of Napa, making minimalist wines that reject the polish and pretension of corporate wine culture. [^40^] [^41^] Dan is the Punk. Kayne is the Un-Punk. The clash between noise and restraint, chaos and clarity, is what makes these wines what they are. [^42^]

From a San Francisco Garage to a Napa Roll-Up

Deux Punx started in a San Francisco garage in 2006, born from the shared obsessions of two wine-addicted ex-punks who had no intention of ever going full-time. [^42^] [^50^] Dan Schaaf — a water resources engineer by day — and Aaron Olson — a software engineer who played drums in a hardcore band — met in 2005 and began making wine together in 2007 with a modest 60 cases. [^50^] Neither had formal training. Neither did internships. They learned piecemeal, year by year, deliberately avoiding the influence of the establishment. "Let's not be influenced, let's be outsiders a little bit," Schaaf explains. [^50^]

The name came from a French neighbour — a spur-of-the-moment decision, not a carefully crafted nod to indie French winemakers. "We didn't overthink it," Schaaf recalls. "I said, 'That's the name!'" [^50^] Simplicity in all things, pragmatic but never dogmatic. The punk references are not marketing — they are DNA. For Schaaf, it was skateboarding. For Olson, it was hardcore drumming. The commonality was frugality: the DIY mentality of making something out of nothing, of pooling scraps of lumber and plywood to build a ramp, of refusing to play by the rules. [^50^]

In 2009, they moved operations to the City of Napa for financial reasons, setting up in a shared roll-up garage in the River East neighbourhood — a space that lends itself perfectly to their minimalist, experimental style. [^40^] [^50^] They have never quit their day jobs. Schaaf believes that being employed full-time in an unrelated field brings a heightened sense of critical perspective to their winemaking. [^50^] The security of a straight gig allows them to take risks in the cellar that full-time winemakers might avoid.

In recent years, Kayne Guzowski has joined the project, bringing a new dynamic. "Dan is the Punk. Kayne is the Un-Punk," the winery explains. "The clash between noise and restraint, chaos and clarity, is what makes these wines what they are." [^42^] This tension — between punk's refusal to play safe and the un-punk's drive for clarity — is the engine of Deux Punx. It is not about being weird for the sake of it. It is about making something no one else is making, something honest, something alive.

"Corporate wine has clubs too, but they're boring. Ours gives you three options, two shipments a year, and zero bullshit."

— Deux Punx

Native Ferments, Minimal SO2 & Neutral Oak

Deux Punx makes every wine the exact same way — whites, reds, all of them. [^50^] Native fermentation. Minimal SO2. Neutral oak. Ambient temperatures. [^40^] [^41^] This consistency is not laziness; it is a deliberate constraint that keeps the process simple and allows the raw materials — the vineyards, the grapes, the vintages — to speak without interference. "We don't add, tweak, or dress things up," the winery states. "Native ferments, minimal interference. The wines come out pure, fresh, clean, and honest, alive in the same way the best records feel alive." [^42^]

The growers are chosen for their farming philosophy. "We want people who mimic what we do in the cellar," says Schaaf. [^50^] To save time and ensure quality, Deux Punx has literally mailed buckets and cheesecloth to growers to get them starting a pied de cuve prior to fermentation. Some are excited; some shake their heads. [^50^] The vineyards span California's most distinctive sites: brambly Pinot Noir from Elk Prairie Vineyards high above the Eel River in Humboldt County; tart strawberry Grenache Noir and Rosé from the Tejada family's Lake County vineyard; tropical Viognier from Scribner Bend in Clarksburg's rich delta soil; lean, mineral Suma Kaw whites from the Sierra Foothills; and the white pepper of Albini Carneros Cabernet Franc. [^40^]

The DIY ethos extends to equipment. They built a homemade carbonic fermentor out of saran wrap — "a poor man's carbonic temple." [^50^] They repurposed old beer kegs from a motorcycle club into a DIY keg filler. [^50^] Every year, they try a new varietal and a new technique, embracing risk and freedom as core values. "We don't want to make weird wine — we just want to make something no one else is making," says Schaaf. [^50^] The result is a portfolio that is fresh, vibrant, sometimes young, but never unsophisticated — generous, open, and punk in its refusal to be influenced by others.

Deux Punx is resolutely anti-trend. Their wines "just don't fit in" at fairs like RAW or Brumaire. [^50^] East Coast distributors once told them they weren't "the buzz." [^50^] Schaaf is disinterested in being fashionable. The wines are priced at what they would buy themselves — "I wouldn't buy a $45 pét-nat, I'd buy a $25 pét-nat. That's our philosophy on things." [^50^] Accessibility is part of the punk ethos: wine meant to be shared and enjoyed, not cellared and ignored.

One Method, All Wines

Native fermentation. Minimal SO2. Neutral oak. Ambient temperatures. [^40^] Every wine — red, white, rosé — is made identically. A deliberate constraint that forces the vineyard, not the cellar, to do the talking.

DIY Equipment

Homemade carbonic fermentor built from saran wrap. [^50^] DIY keg filler from repurposed motorcycle club beer kegs. [^50^] The frugality of skaters pooling scrap lumber — applied to winemaking.

Clean Farming Partners

Growers who farm clean, who mimic the cellar philosophy in the vineyard. [^42^] [^50^] Elk Prairie (Humboldt), Tejada (Lake County), Scribner Bend (Clarksburg), Suma Kaw (Sierra Foothills), Albini (Carneros). [^40^]

Accessible Pricing

"Priced at what we would buy ourselves." [^50^] No $45 pét-nats. No trophy pricing. Wine for drinking, not cellaring. The anti-corporate-wine stance in action.

Truly Unpopular Since 2008

Deux Punx's relationship with the natural wine world is complicated. They are listed on RAW WINE and Raisin, recognised as part of the community. [^51^] [^49^] But Schaaf feels a negative effect to being "an outsider" — their wines don't fit the aesthetic of the trendy natural wine fair. [^50^] They are too clean, too honest, too unpretentious. There is no funk for funk's sake, no oxidation as a statement, no weirdness as a badge of honour. Just wine that tastes like where it came from, made by people who refuse to play safe.

The punk ethos is not a middle finger to taste. It is a middle finger to pretension. Schaaf discovered natural wine through Randall Grahm's eccentric approach at Bonny Doon Vineyards — "the first weird wine I got into" — and through Crushpad, the defunct San Francisco winemaking collective that democratised the process. [^50^] The appeal was never about being contrarian; it was about tolerance, about accepting wine on its own terms, about the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. "Risk and freedom are deeply embedded in their DNA," as one writer observed. [^50^]

The labels are designed by Dan's artist friends — unique, quirky, and paired with musical genius. [^40^] [^41^] Each bottle is a small act of rebellion against the corporate wine aesthetic: no gold foil, no embossed crests, no heritage font. Just art made by friends, wine made by punks, and a belief that the best things in life are shared, not hoarded. "Deux Punx isn't wine for trends or trophies. It's wine with a pulse." [^42^]

Today, Deux Punx continues to operate from their Napa garage, making 700–800 cases annually, hosting tastings, running a wine club with "zero bullshit," and proving that you can make serious, expressive, natural wine without taking yourself seriously. [^42^] [^50^] They are aging punkers in a young person's game, and they wouldn't have it any other way. Truly unpopular since 2008 — and proud of it.

Orange Chardonnay — Russian River, Skin Contact, Native Ferment

"Orange Chardonnay fermented in neutral oak barrels. The simple native and ambient fermentation with full skin contact combined with 100% neutral oak." [^45^] Sourced from the River Road Vineyard in Russian River, this is Deux Punx at their most experimental — taking California's most ubiquitous white grape and treating it with the irreverence it deserves. Skin contact brings texture and tannin; native fermentation brings life and unpredictability; neutral oak lets the grape speak without vanilla masking. The result is an orange wine that is pure, fresh, clean, and honest — alive in the same way the best records feel alive. At around $25–$28, it is exactly the kind of wine Schaaf would buy himself: accessible, interesting, and utterly unpretentious.

The Deux Punx Range

Deux Punx produces a focused portfolio of minimalist natural wines from vineyards across California — from Humboldt County to Lake County, the Russian River to the Sierra Foothills, Clarksburg to Carneros. [^40^] [^48^] All wines are made with the same method: native fermentation, minimal SO2, neutral oak, and ambient temperatures. [^41^] The range reflects Dan and Kayne's curiosity and their commitment to making "something no one else is making" — wines that are fresh, vibrant, and honest, priced for drinking rather than collecting. [^50^] Prices are approximate and in USD.
