Eschenhof Holzer (Wagram, Austria)

Eschenhof Holzer is a highly dynamic and innovative winery located in Großriedenthal, in the Wagram wine region northwest of Vienna, Austria. Run by the young and ambitious Arnold Holzer, the estate represents a harmonious blend of deep family tradition and modern, boundary-pushing winemaking.

The Winemaker and Philosophy

  • Fifth Generation: Arnold Holzer is the fifth generation of his family to manage the estate, taking over from his parents in 2010 at the age of just 23. The name "Eschenhof" (Ash/Oak Farm) comes from the trees standing by the old cellar where the red wine is stored.

  • Respect for Terroir: The 16-hectare estate focuses entirely on reflecting the unique Wagram terroir. The vineyards are primarily rooted in deep, ancient loess soil—a fine, mineral-rich silt deposited during the last ice age. This soil holds water effectively, allowing the vines to thrive in the low-rainfall Pannonian climate and imparting a distinct fruitiness, character, and richness to the wines.

  • Organic & Natural Approach: Arnold Holzer has transitioned the vineyards to certified organic farming (AT-BIO-302), eliminating herbicides and pesticides and using only natural compost. In the cellar, his philosophy is one of minimal intervention, using spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and very low sulfur additions, allowing the wines to express themselves fully.

Signature Wines and Style

Holzer's style is characterized by clear structure, pronounced fruit, and a combination of classic Wagram typicity with an open-minded, creative flair.

  • Grüner Veltliner: As is typical for Wagram, Grüner Veltliner is the primary focus. Holzer produces various levels, known for being broad and crisp at the same time, with subtle peppery notes.

  • Roter Veltliner: He is a key advocate for the indigenous and rare Roter Veltliner, producing fulsome and characterful expressions of this Wagram specialty.

  • Innovation: Arnold is a pioneer of the Austrian natural wine scene. His line of Pet-Nats (naturally sparkling) and Orange Wines (skin-contact whites), such as the popular 'Invader Orange' (often made from Müller-Thurgau), showcase his experimental side and his commitment to making approachable, thirst-quenching, and fun natural wines.

Eschenhof Holzer is recognized for being at the cutting edge of the Austrian wine scene, successfully translating the Wagram's natural wealth into a diverse portfolio that appeals to both traditional wine lovers and the modern natural wine community.
