Champagne's Paradox Vintage

The earliest, smallest, hottest harvest in the region's recorded history may also be one of its greatest — and it has already forced the rulebook to be rewritten.

Nothing in Champagne's record books has started earlier. The 2026 harvest officially opened on August 12 — some parcels were picked as early as August 6 — comfortably eclipsing the previous record of August 17, set in the pandemic vintage of 2020. Before the modern era, you have to go back to August 20, 1822 to find anything comparable. What followed was a season of superlatives in every direction: brutal spring frosts, five summer heatwaves, almost no rain from June onward, and grapes so concentrated that the region's legal alcohol ceiling had to be raised for the first time in its history.

A season of extremes

The year began with loss. A late-March frost struck after mild temperatures triggered early budburst, destroying roughly 40 percent of the region's buds — in parts of the Aisne, losses ran to 85 percent. Then came the heat: five separate heatwaves across a summer in which, at Champagne Philipponnat, only 40 millimetres of rain fell after June 1. The vines survived by shutting down during the hottest hours of the day and recovering at night, drawing on groundwater stored in the chalk from a wetter start to the year.

The result is a tiny crop. The Comité Champagne set a commercialisable yield of 8,800 kg per hectare — the tightest cap since 2020 — but the agronomic yield, what growers actually brought in, is closer to 7,000 kg/ha, against 9,900 last year. At Philipponnat's prized Clos des Goisses, the average was roughly 4,500 kg/ha, about half the norm. The house harvested for just nine days, from August 15 to 23. "It was quick," said president Charles Philipponnat, "because there was not much to pick."

The alcohol problem

Low yields, sustained heat and drought concentrated sugars to levels Champagne has never had to legislate for. While the appellation average stayed below 12 percent potential alcohol, individual parcels pushed past 13 percent — over the legal ceiling that had stood for decades. In what newspaper L'Indépendant called "a first," French authorities approved the CIVC's request for a temporary exemption allowing wines of up to 15 percent ABV from the 2026 vintage, even after chaptalization. "This request became necessary in light of climate change," the trade body said.

And yet the paradox of 2026 is that the same small crop that created the sugar problem may have saved the wine. Had yields been higher, Philipponnat estimates potential alcohol would have sat nearer 10 percent; instead, scarcity concentrated everything — sugar, acid, and flavour alike. Ripeness monitoring showed acidity holding at levels slightly above last year, with sugar-acid ratios just inside the ideal picking window. "So maybe the blessing was that the yields were low," he said.

The verdict — and the warning

The Comité Champagne is not hiding its optimism: the fruit came in healthy and ripe, and the balance of the raw material has been compared to the historic vintages of 1921, 1947 and 1959. But the region's co-president Maxime Toubart framed 2026 less as a triumph than as a preview: "This exceptional harvest will surely be the norm in 10 or 15 years. It should make us think about the future of Champagne." Growers are already weighing responses — more Chardonnay, the reintroduction of high-acidity varieties, picking decisions planned by the hour rather than the week.

France as a whole will feel the shortfall: the national harvest is projected at 33.8 million hectolitres, down 6 percent on 2025 and 17 percent below the five-year average — one of the smallest in three decades. In Champagne, at least, scarcity may come with a silver lining in the glass.

Roussillon Plans Against the Future

On the terraced slopes of the Côte Vermeille, the growers of Collioure and Banyuls are contemplating the previously unthinkable — moving the vineyard itself.

Few vineyard landscapes in the world are as dramatic as this one: dry-stone terraces tumbling down through Collioure, Port-Vendres, Banyuls-sur-Mer and Cerbère to the Mediterranean, farmed by hand where machines cannot go. It is also, after another blisteringly hot summer, one of the most exposed wine regions in France. Now the syndicate of Collioure and Banyuls growers has launched a strategic recovery plan — spanning terroir, tourism and economics — whose most radical element is a pair of scientific studies to determine where the vineyards of tomorrow should actually be.

The economic pressure is as severe as the climatic one. "A third of our production is sold at a loss, it's a disaster," says syndicate president Romuald Perrone. "If we want to keep making a living from these vineyards, we have no choice but to believe in this relaunch project."

Ninety sensors and sixty soil pits

The plan rests on two studies. The first, completed over 2024–25, deployed ninety connected sensors at strategic points across the appellation, producing a climate map of temperatures, solar radiation, humidity, wind and rainfall. The second — a pedological survey built on auger borings and sixty soil pits — is underway now, with results due in 2027. Together they will produce a definitive map at 1:20,000 scale, identifying the sites best suited to future planting: higher-altitude plots and north-facing slopes that can deliver fresher, more balanced wines.

The maths is stark. The combined appellations currently farm around 1,050 hectares, with average yields below 20 hl/ha and total production near 20,000 hectolitres across three AOPs — dry Collioure, and the vins doux naturels of Banyuls and Banyuls Grand Cru. Beyond today's boundaries lies roughly 2,000 hectares of plantable land, of which 500 to 1,000 hectares might suit the vineyards of tomorrow. Just as significantly, the studies will name the parcels that are becoming too hot and dry to farm — and may have to be abandoned.

From survival to cru status

Survival is only the first step. The long-term ambition is classification: vineyard mapping will reinforce plot-level differentiation, named sites will appear on labels, and the syndicate intends to submit a revised dossier to the INAO seeking recognition of crus — and ultimately premiers crus. In the new specifications, Grenache Gris becomes the dominant grape of Collioure Blanc at a minimum 50 percent of the blend, preserving a historic variety that gives freshness, salinity and minerality on the region's brown schist.

The market logic has inverted since the vineyard was replanted after the war, when the goal was maximum sugar for Banyuls. "Today, consumers are looking for dry white wines, and reds with less alcohol," says Akhiridinov. The cavalry, meanwhile, has already arrived in the form of Domaine Lafage, which stepped in this summer to rescue the majority of Banyuls and Collioure production — bringing with it regenerative viticulture, biochar and agroforestry programmes honed on its own A Greener World-certified estate.

If the model works, its authors believe it could travel — a blueprint for every heroic vineyard region, from the Douro to the Cinque Terre, now staring at the same map of a hotter century.
