NIBIRU WINE (Thürneustift / Kamptal, Austria)

NIBIRU WINE is the collaborative project of winemakers Josef Schenter and Julia Nather, located in Thürneustift, one of the northernmost and coolest villages in the Kamptal region of Lower Austria. Since founding the project in 2015, they have quickly become leading voices in the country’s natural and biodynamic wine movement.

Philosophy: The Opposite Orbit

The name Nibiru is drawn from a Sumerian myth about a planet that orbits the sun in the opposite direction from all others. This myth reflects Josef and Julia's own determination to follow a unique path:

  • Biodynamic Farming: The 8 to 22 hectares of vineyards are farmed certified organic and biodynamic (AT-BIO-401, with some sites even achieving Demeter status). They strive for "true holistic farming," using practices like creating their own compost (from pomace, horse manure, and straw) and fostering wild growth between rows to maximize biodiversity.

  • Minimal Intervention: Their core principle is honesty. In the cellar, all wines undergo spontaneous fermentation(including malolactic) with indigenous yeasts, without fining, filtration, or supplementation. Sulfur usage is kept to an absolute minimum or entirely omitted.

  • Terroir Expression: Their focus is on the unique, cool-toned elegance of the northern Kamptal, with its soils of loess, gneiss, quartz, and decomposed primary rock, particularly from the top site Goldnagel.

The Wines

NIBIRU WINE features wines that are clean, transparent, and precise, yet relaxed and utterly compelling.

  • 'Grundstein' & 'Nord' Series: These wines express the pure typicity and lively freshness of the northern Kamptal, often featuring their core white varieties like Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Müller-Thurgau.

  • 'Amphibolit' Single Vineyards: These wines are serious, single-vineyard expressions from sites like Goldnagel, reflecting the unique Amphibolite rock soil. They are often fermented in large oak barrels and aged for two years before release.

  • 'TRADITION' & Experimental Wines: This line often includes non-vintage field blends (Gemischter Satz), skin-contact whites, and Pet-Nats, reflecting an older, traditional way of blending vintages to balance variation and build complexity.

NIBIRU WINE successfully bridges the gap between classic northern Austrian character and the excitement of the natural wine world, earning them international acclaim.
