San Francisco
Key
Ruby Wine
The beating heart of San Francisco's natural wine scene hides in a former check-cashing spot on 24th Street, where the Valencia corridor's gentrification meets Mission District soul. Owner Sam Bilbro (Idlewild Wines) has curated a bottle shop and standing-room-only bar that feels like drinking in your coolest friend's living room—if your friend had impeccable taste in Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir and Loire Valley Chenin. The selection leans heavy on California minimal-intervention producers—Arnot-Roberts, Jolie-Laide, Martha Stoumen, and cult favorites from the Sonoma Coast—alongside classic French naturalists. There's no kitchen, just shelves of tinned fish, local cheeses, and Acme sourdough to accompany your pét-nat. It's cramped, loud, and occasionally foggy inside (thanks, Karl), with a crowd that mixes tattooed industry veterans, tech workers spending their stock options, and old-school Mission residents who remember when this block was different. Cash is king, the vinyl player spins everything from Dead Kennedys to Khruangbin, and if you can't find a rare California skin-contact white here, it doesn't exist.
