Can Lleó
Can Lleó de Vilanoveta is a historic family estate and winery situated in Sant Martí Sarroca, in the heart of the Penedès wine region of Catalonia. The property includes a traditional Catalan masía, an 18th-century winery building, and a small family chapel — the Ermita de la Mare de Déu del Roser, dating back to 1750. For generations, the estate belonged to the Lleó family, who cultivated its vineyards and upheld the region’s winemaking traditions.
After a period of inactivity, the family undertook a full revival of the old winery in 2022. The renovation restored the original architectural elements of the masía and cellar while introducing modern equipment designed for quality, small-batch winemaking. This balance between heritage and innovation defines the identity of Can Lleó today.
Vineyards & Terroir
The Can Lleó estate spans more than 140 hectares of vineyards, many planted on calcareous soils typical of the Penedès. Located between 200 and 350 meters in elevation, these vines benefit from Mediterranean influences and cooling breezes that help maintain acidity and freshness.
A significant portion of the vineyards consists of old bush vines, some over 50 years in age, cultivated with organic and sustainable agricultural practices. The estate works with both native and traditional grape varieties. Among the whites, Macabeu, Parellada, and Xarel·lo stand out, along with some international varieties. For reds, Garnatxa, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon play important roles. These vines are carefully managed to express the unique landscapes surrounding Sant Martí Sarroca.
Winemaking Philosophy
Can Lleó follows a philosophy centered on sustainability, terroir expression, and respect for tradition. All grapes are hand-harvested in small boxes to preserve their integrity, and the winery produces wines only from its own estate-grown fruit.
Since the winery’s revival, Can Lleó has created a collection of wines that reflect both its historic vineyards and the Mediterranean climate. Their first vintage included six wines made primarily from Macabeu, Parellada, and Garnatxa. Winemaking methods range from stainless-steel fermentation to traditional practices such as ancestral-method sparkling wines or amphora-influenced styles.
The aim is always the same: to craft wines that are honest, expressive, and deeply rooted in the identity of the estate.
Heritage & Vision
At its core, Can Lleó is a project of revival and preservation. The restoration of the old masía and winery represents a commitment to protecting local history while preparing the estate for a new generation of winemaking.
The family’s vision prioritizes sustainability, authenticity, and a strong connection to the landscape. Their dedication to native grape varieties, organic farming, and mindful winemaking helps maintain the cultural fabric of the Penedès and ensures that traditional viticulture continues to thrive.
