Colombo Sormani

History & Philosophy

Colombo Sormani was founded in 2019 by friends Lorenzo Colombo and Andrea Sormani, who decided to revive and reinterpret the long viticultural traditions of Valtellina. They began with a small parcel of vines in the Sassella area and have since expanded their vineyard holdings across Sassella, Castione Andevenno, Chiuro, Ponte in Valtellina, and Teglio.

Their vineyards are planted on steep, terraced slopes with dry stone walls, and all work is carried out by hand. The estate follows organic farming principles and is currently in conversion toward full organic certification.

Vineyard & Terroir

  • Current vineyard surface: approximately 1.5–2 hectares.

  • Soils: characteristic of Valtellina, with rocky terraces and poor mineral soils that encourage low yields and concentrated fruit.

  • Vineyards sit at elevations between 300–600 meters.

  • Grape variety: Nebbiolo (Chiavennasca).

  • Average annual production: around 7,000 bottles.

Winemaking & Practices

  • Fermentation with indigenous yeasts only; no correction of must.

  • Wines are produced without fining or filtration.

  • Rosso di Valtellina “Risc”: Nebbiolo with 8–10 days maceration, aged in stainless steel, fresh and vibrant.

  • Valtellina Superiore “Puntesel”: Nebbiolo aged ~12 months in oak barrels (5–10 hL), structured and complex.

  • Valtellina Superiore “Sassella”: Nebbiolo from Sassella cru vineyards, also aged in oak with traditional long maturation.

Identity

Colombo Sormani’s approach is to highlight the purity of Chiavennasca (Nebbiolo) in Valtellina, respecting both tradition and the environment. Their wines balance freshness, terroir character, and elegance, produced in small volumes and with strong artisanal identity.
