Two Labels, One Master: Nature
Draga-Miklus is a generational family winery in the Collio hills of Friuli Venezia Giulia, on the border with Slovenia. Founded in the early 1900s by Ivan Miklus, the estate spans 9 hectares of organically farmed vineyards on the legendary "ponka" soil — a unique marl and sandstone of Eocene origin that imparts world-renowned minerality. Today, Mitja Miklus leads the winery with his tireless parents Anna and Milan, united by passion and the experience of generations. The estate produces two distinct lines: "Draga" — fresh, fragrant, modern wines vinified in stainless steel; and "Miklus" — fuller-bodied, traditional wines with long maceration and extended ageing in large oak barrels. Since 2006 they have pioneered orange wines in the region; since 2012 they have produced classic method sparkling wines. Their philosophy is unwavering: they have chosen only one master — nature.
From Ivan's Hands to Mitja's Vision
The story of Draga-Miklus begins in the early 1900s, when Ivan Miklus acquired land in the Collio hills to devote to vine cultivation. With the help of his son Franz, he renewed one hectare of vineyard by digging the solid land with his own hands as deep as 80 centimetres — a labour of love that set the foundation for generations to come. Soon Franz was called for military service, and after a few years he was offered a position as commander in aviation. Even against his father's will, he refused, choosing a much harder life but one that gave him more satisfaction. Working the land at that time required far more effort and sweat than today.
In 1950, in a small house garage, the production of wine started — first in bulk, later also bottled. In the 1990s the garage was enlarged and transformed into a small wine cellar, and some vineyards were purchased in the Draga area. In 1992, constant wine commerce began with the first labels named Draga. Later, grandson Milan — with great help from his wife Anna — started to produce wines labeled Miklus as well. In 1996, the construction of a new cellar began with modern equipment and much greater capacity, and in 1997 Milan started producing wines in wooden barrels. The modern era of the estate was born.
In 2006, the estate began producing orange wines — long-macerated whites that have since become their signature. In 2012, they started production of classic method sparkling wines, adding another dimension to their portfolio. Today, the winery is run by Mitja Miklus, who leads with the passion and determination of his ancestors, alongside his tireless parents Anna and Milan. The family has been awarded several eco-friendly prizes for their sustainable practices. Their grandfather Franz's words still echo through the cellar: "If you respect the nature and the land, they will never betray you."
"For years we have been aiming at increasing the attention to the vineyards and grape selection, as it is from the raw material that a high quality product is made."

Ponka, Collio & The Adriatic Breeze
Draga-Miklus's vineyards are located in the Collio DOC, in the hills of San Floriano del Collio, on the border with Slovenia. The estate covers approximately 9 hectares, divided into two distinct plots that give their names to the two wine labels. The "Draga" vineyards are planted in the sunniest part of the estate at an altitude of 200 metres, and have always produced excellent crops. The "Breg" vineyards are planted at 220 metres and surround the winery; they are also exposed to the sun but beaten by stronger winds, where the most resistant grapes find comfort. Both plots share the same extraordinary soil — the legendary "ponka" of Collio.
The terroir is a complex mosaic of marl and sandstone of Eocene origin — a soil type locally called "ponka" that is rich in microelements and minerals. This soil is the key to the wines' renowned minerality, making them unique in the world. The area is sheltered from the cold of the Alps in the north and accompanied by the sea breeze of the Adriatic Sea in the south, creating an ideal microclimate for viticulture. Considerable ventilation and wide diurnal temperature ranges greatly contribute to the quality of the grapes, concentrating flavours while preserving acidity.
Farming is organic certified, with vineyards entirely covered with grass and managed with maximum respect for the environment and the consumer. No herbicides are used. The grape growing methods are Cappuccina and Guyot, with 4,000 to 6,000 plants per hectare. Production is kept very low — from 4,000 to 7,000 kg per hectare — to ensure the highest quality. Most work in the vineyards, such as harvest, crop thinning, and grape selection, is done by hand, respecting tradition and necessitated by the steep slopes. The estate has received several eco-friendly awards and operates with deep environmental consciousness.
Sustainability extends beyond the vineyard. The wine is bottled in lightweight glass to reduce environmental impact. The estate benefits from green energy generated by two photovoltaic systems. Rainwater is recovered in a large tank for agricultural use and machinery cleaning. A natural water spring provides independent water supply even during drier years. Renewable energy is also used for heating business premises. The pomace is returned to the vineyard as fertiliser, closing the agricultural loop. Every decision reflects the family's conviction that respect for nature is the foundation of great wine.

Two Labels, One Master: Nature
At Draga-Miklus, the cellar philosophy is a balance between tradition and innovation, guided by a single master: nature. The family produces two distinct lines of wine, each reflecting a different facet of their terroir and winemaking philosophy. The "Draga" label represents fresh, fragrant, and more modern wines vinified in stainless steel — wines of immediacy, purity, and youthful energy. The "Miklus" label is a tribute to tradition — fuller-bodied wines that undergo long maceration on the skins and extended ageing in large oak barrels or barriques, sometimes for up to 48 months. Together, they offer a complete portrait of what Collio can achieve.
The techniques are precise, demanding, and deeply respectful of the raw material:
Harvest & Selection: All grapes are hand-harvested due to the steep slopes of the vineyards. Crop thinning and grape selection are performed manually with meticulous care. The family has long aimed at increasing attention to the vineyards and grape selection, understanding that a high-quality product can only come from high-quality raw material. Specific vineyards are dedicated to specific wines; there are no multiple passes through the same vineyard for different cuvées.
"Draga" Label — Fresh & Modern: These wines are fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness, primary fruit, and the crystalline minerality of the ponka soil. The Draga line includes fresh whites and light reds that are approachable young — wines that showcase the immediacy and purity of the Collio terroir without the weight of oak or extended ageing. They are vibrant, aromatic, and unmistakably mineral.
"Miklus" Label — Traditional & Aged: These wines undergo long maceration on the skins and are aged in large oak barrels or barriques for extended periods — some cuvées spending up to 48 months in wood before bottling. This is the traditional face of Collio winemaking, producing wines of extraordinary depth, complexity, and ageing potential. The Miklus line includes the estate's renowned orange wines, long-macerated whites that have become iconic in the natural wine world.
Orange Wines: Since 2006, Draga-Miklus has been a pioneer of orange wine production in Collio. Their long-macerated whites — Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana, Pinot Grigio — spend extended periods on the skins, extracting colour, tannin, and complex phenolic compounds. These are not trendy experiments; they are deeply considered wines that honour ancient winemaking traditions while expressing the unique character of Collio's varieties and terroir.
Classic Method Sparkling: Since 2012, the estate has produced classic method sparkling wines — bottle-fermented, aged on the lees, and finished with zero dosage (pas dosè) or minimal dosage. These sparkling wines demonstrate the family's commitment to precision and their belief that Collio's grapes can achieve greatness not only in still form but also as méthode champenoise expressions of minerality and finesse.
Reds: The red portfolio includes Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, grown in the Breg vineyards where the stronger winds favour the most resistant varieties. These are handled with the same meticulous care as the whites — hand-harvested, carefully selected, and vinified to express the earthy, mineral character of Collio's red wines. The Collio Rosso blends indigenous and international varieties with balance and restraint.
Pét-Nat: The estate also produces pétillant naturel wines — bottled before primary fermentation is complete, trapping natural bubbles. These are fresh, youthful, and vibrant expressions of Collio's natural wine spirit, adding another dimension to the family's experimental yet grounded approach.
"Miklus Ribolla Gialla" — "Orange Wine Icon of Collio — 48 Months in Wood"
The "Miklus Ribolla Gialla" is Draga-Miklus's most celebrated wine — an iconic orange wine that showcases the complexity and extraordinary ageing potential of this ancient Friulian variety. It is the flagship of the Miklus label, a testament to the family's commitment to long maceration, extended wood ageing, and the pure expression of Collio's unique terroir.
The grapes come from the organically farmed Breg vineyards at 220 metres altitude, where the stronger winds and ponka soil create ideal conditions for Ribolla Gialla — a variety known for its thick skins, high acidity, and ability to develop profound complexity with age. The vines are trained in Guyot and Cappuccina systems, with extremely low yields of 4,000–7,000 kg per hectare, ensuring concentrated, mineral-rich fruit. Harvest is entirely by hand, with careful selection of the finest bunches.
In the cellar, the grapes undergo long maceration on the skins — weeks or even months of contact that extracts colour, tannin, and phenolic compounds, transforming the wine from a simple white into an orange wine of extraordinary depth and structure. Fermentation is spontaneous with indigenous yeasts, without synthetic additives or temperature manipulation. After maceration, the wine is transferred to large oak barrels or barriques, where it ages for up to 48 months — an exceptionally long period that develops layers of complexity, softens the tannins, and integrates the wine's intense mineral backbone with notes of dried apricot, wild honey, toasted nuts, and exotic spice.
In the glass, it is deep amber-orange with a luminous, almost glowing intensity. The nose is complex and evolving — dried orange peel, apricot kernel, wild honey, saffron, toasted almond, and a distinct mineral salinity that speaks of the ponka soil beneath the vines. The palate is full-bodied and textured, with firm yet integrated tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, savoury finish that lingers for minutes. This is not a wine for the faint-hearted; it is a wine of conviction, patience, and terroir — demanding food pairing and contemplative drinking.
The Miklus Ribolla Gialla embodies everything that makes Draga-Miklus significant in the natural wine world: organic farming, indigenous yeasts, long maceration, extended wood ageing, zero compromise, and an unwavering respect for nature. It is a wine that proves orange wine is not a trend but a tradition — one that Collio has been perfecting for centuries. Serve at 14–16°C with rich, fatty dishes: aged cheeses, braised pork, truffle pasta, or fermented vegetables. It will reward 5–10 years of cellaring, developing more earthy, umami, and dried fruit complexity. ~$35–$55 / ~€32–€50.
