Cool New Places to Check Out This January
New York’s winter slowdown hasn’t dulled its appetite for exciting openings—especially when it comes to natural wine and thoughtful, unfussy food. From a modern American newcomer in the West Village to wine-driven concepts in the East Village and Chinatown, these fresh spots are already shaping up to be winter favorites.
Just down the road from Le Baratin, Arvine has quietly popped up in Greenwich Village, while Overthrow Hospitality debuts Long Count, a laid-back wine and focaccia bar on Avenue B. And on the storied curve of Doyers Street, Lei brings a deeply personal, wine-forward vision to Chinatown. Here are the new openings worth checking out right now.

Arvine Opens in the West Village: A Modern American Gem from Bouley and Gabriel Kreuther Alumni
This October 2025, the West Village welcomes Arvine, a modern American restaurant from hospitality veterans Adrien Falcon and Chef Joe Anthony, the duo behind Arvine Hospitality.
Owned and envisioned by Falcon—an alum of Bouley and Keith McNally’s restaurants, and a finalist in the prestigious Meilleur Ouvrier de France Sommelier competition—Arvine places wine at the heart of the experience. The program showcases rare European bottles, back vintages, and an expansive by-the-glass selection designed for both discovery and approachability.
Leading the kitchen is Chef/Partner Joe Anthony, whose résumé spans some of the country’s most respected dining rooms, including Gabriel Kreuther, Daniel, Union Square Café, The Modern, and most recently The Moore in Miami’s Design District. Together, Falcon and Anthony bring decades of fine-dining expertise to a shared philosophy: honest, beautifully executed food that feels welcoming and memorable.

Long Count
Bringing Aged Wine and Slow Food to the East Village
Long Count is a new wine and focaccia bar from Overthrow Hospitality located at 155 Avenue B in the East Village. Centered on fermentation, aging, and patience, Long Count offers a rare approach to mature wine: every wine poured by the glass is ten years old or more, served in a casual, welcoming setting.
Led by Partner & Wine Director Drew Brady (Soda Club), the program sources overlooked older vintages from importer cellars and distributor backstock, bringing together oxidative whites, aged rosés, structured reds, and skin-contact wines shaped by time rather than trend.
The food, from Chef Galen Kennemer (Blanca, One White Street) and Chef Haley Duren (Cadence), mirrors the philosophy with warm focaccia and small plates built around fermentation and aged ingredients.

Lei’s - Chinatown
Located on the storied Doyers Street in Manhattan’s Chinatown, Lei is a wine bar by restaurateur Annie Shi (King, Jupiter). A native New Yorker, Shi created Lei as a deeply personal expression of her Chinese American roots and lifelong love of wine.
Lei’s wine program, overseen by Shi with support from wine director Matt Turner, serves as its core. The 750-reference selection eschews viticultural labels, instead encouraging exploration and enjoyment across a broad range of styles. The global wine list features up-and-coming voices from Spain, Greece, China and further flung destinations as well as classic producers from Burgundy and Champagne. By-the-glass options rotate constantly and are supplemented by a special, daily pour selected by the sommelier team.
The menu, crafted collaboratively by Shi and chef Patty Lee (Mission Chinese Food), combines regional Chinese fare with dishes rooted in Shi’s familial memories and travels abroad. Specifically tailored to complement wine of all kinds, dishes include snacks such as sesame shao bing flatbread and fried “Dali” goat’s cheese with toasted five spice as well as heartier fare such as a sweet and sour beef short rib.
