Richmond Plains

Richmond Plains is a small, family-owned winery located in the Nelson region at the top of New Zealand's South Island. The winery is a true pioneer in organic and biodynamic viticulture, known for producing New Zealand's first certified organic and biodynamic Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Their philosophy is centered on "working with nature" to create wines that are a genuine expression of their unique terroir.

History

The vineyard was established in 1991 by Lars and Samantha Jensen, who had a strong belief in the purity of organic farming and its direct translation into the quality of the wine. From its inception, the winery was committed to organic methods, and they were the first in New Zealand to produce a certified organic Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

In 2006, the Jensens took their commitment a step further by embracing biodynamic practices. Their dedication to this holistic farming philosophy led to them receiving Demeter certification, solidifying their status as leaders in sustainable and environmentally conscious winemaking. The distinctive Koru, or unfolding fern frond, on their label symbolizes this philosophy of new beginnings, unfolding life, and growth, reflecting the natural cycles of the vineyard.

Richmond Plains has also been a pioneer in other areas, producing New Zealand's first Blanc de Noir, a white wine made from Pinot Noir grapes.

Technical Details

Richmond Plains' technical approach to both viticulture and winemaking is defined by its commitment to organic and biodynamic principles, with a focus on creating a healthy, self-sustaining vineyard ecosystem.

  • Viticulture:

    • Certified Biodynamic and Organic: The vineyards are certified organic by AsureQuality and Demeter-certified biodynamic. This means they are farmed without the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides, or fertilizers.

    • Biodiversity: The winery actively promotes biodiversity by planting cover crops, using natural predator-prey relationships to manage pests, and encouraging a variety of native birds, lizards, and beneficial insects. The vineyard is a natural carbon sink, with pruning, grasses, and other organic matter mulched back into the soil.

    • Soil Health: The focus is on nurturing biologically active soils through the use of biological brews and compost teas. This enriches the soil with natural fertility and millions of beneficial organisms, leading to healthier, more resilient vines.

    • Manual Labor: Intensive manual techniques are used to care for the vines, ensuring optimal fruit quality.

  • Winemaking:

    • Minimal Intervention: The winemaking philosophy is based on a "hands-off" approach, allowing the unique character of the grapes to shine through.

    • On-Site Winery: The grapes are picked at optimal ripeness and immediately taken to the estate's own winery for processing.

    • Vegan-Friendly: All of their wines are vegan, as they do not use animal products like gelatin or fish to fine their wines.

    • Sulphur Management: While sulphur dioxide (preservative 220) is used to protect the wines, the amounts are kept to a minimum. Richmond Plains' wines typically contain much less than the maximum allowable for certified organic wines, making them a popular choice for those with sensitivities.
