Alessandro Viola: A Master of Natural Winemaking in Alcamo, Sicily

Alessandro Viola is a distinguished winemaker from Alcamo, a charming town located in northwestern Sicily. Known for his commitment to organic farming and natural winemaking practices, Viola has garnered attention for crafting wines that truly express the essence of the Sicilian terroir. His philosophy centers around minimal intervention, allowing the natural qualities of the grapes and their environment to shine through.

The Vineyards and Terroir

Viola’s vineyards span approximately 7 hectares, planted in two primary regions with distinct terroirs. One lies on the slopes of Mount Bonifato, where the vineyards are situated at elevations ranging from 250 to 700 meters. This area benefits from a Mediterranean climate and varied soils composed of limestone and sand, with the cool, humid sea breezes from the nearby Gulf of Castellammare adding to its unique microclimate.

The second vineyard is located in Pietra Rinosa, closer to Alcamo, at about 200 meters above sea level. Here, the soils are primarily clay, and the area enjoys a more oceanic climate, which further contributes to the distinct characteristics of the wines produced. Viola cultivates a range of indigenous Sicilian grape varieties, including Grillo, Catarratto, Nero d’Avola, Syrah, and Nerello Mascalese, all of which thrive in these diverse growing conditions.

Viola adheres to organic farming principles, avoiding the use of pesticides, herbicides, and chemical fertilizers. All vineyard work is carried out manually, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and respect for the environment.

Winemaking Philosophy

Alessandro Viola’s approach to winemaking is rooted in a philosophy of minimal intervention. He prioritizes spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts and produces wines that are unfiltered and unfined, allowing the natural characteristics of the grapes to be fully expressed. Sulfites are generally not added, further preserving the purity and integrity of the wine. This approach reflects his belief that wine should be a true reflection of both the grape and the land it comes from.

Viola's dedication to crafting wines in this traditional manner aligns with his goal of producing wines that offer an authentic taste of Sicily. By allowing nature to take its course in the vineyard and winery, Viola’s wines maintain a vibrant and lively character, showcasing the raw beauty of the region’s winegrowing potential.
