Birdhorse Wines: Breaking the Mold in California Winemaking

In a landscape often dominated by tradition, Birdhorse Wines stands out as a refreshing force of innovation, authenticity, and diversity in the California wine scene. Based in Santa Rosa and founded in 2018 by Corinne Rich and Katie Rouse, Birdhorse is a proudly woman- and LGBTQ+-owned winery that's rewriting the rules of what California wine can be.

The Founders: A Shared Vision

Corinne and Katie met while studying for their Master’s degrees in Viticulture and Enology at UC Davis. Their shared passion for lesser-known grape varietals, sustainability, and equity in the wine industry sparked the idea for Birdhorse Wines. Their mission is simple yet bold: to highlight the regions, grapes, and people that have long existed on the fringes of mainstream wine culture — and give them the spotlight they deserve.

Birdhorse isn’t just about making good wine — it’s about pushing boundaries and telling new stories through the lens of each bottle.

Winemaking Philosophy: Minimal Intervention, Maximum Character

The Birdhorse approach to winemaking is all about letting the fruit speak for itself. They work with growers in regions like Suisun Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Mendocino, and Amador County, partnering with vineyards that emphasize organic and sustainable practices.

In the cellar, their philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention: fermentations with native yeasts, little to no new oak, and minimal sulfur use. The goal? Honest wines that express both varietal character and the uniqueness of each vineyard site.

A Unique Lineup of Wines

One of Birdhorse’s standout qualities is their devotion to uncommon grape varietals that are rarely seen on mainstream shelves. Their portfolio includes:

  • Verdelho – A bright, citrusy white wine with zingy acidity.

  • Arneis – A floral and mineral-rich white originally from Italy’s Piedmont region.

  • Valdiguié – Sometimes called "Napa Gamay," this light red delivers vibrant red fruit and juicy freshness.

  • Carignan – From old vines in Mendocino, this red wine offers complexity and earthy depth.

  • Barbera – An Italian classic reimagined with California flair, known for its food-friendly acidity and cherry brightness.

  • Rosé – Crafted from a blend of grapes that changes with each vintage, always crisp, dry, and joyful.

Each wine is crafted with intention, offering a modern take on California terroir and varietal expression.

More Than a Winery: A Movement

Birdhorse Wines doesn’t stop at bottles — the brand is deeply engaged with its community and causes. In 2023, they released the Heliotrope Red Blend, donating a portion of proceeds to the Tegan and Sara Foundation, which supports LGBTQ+ youth programs. This kind of commitment underscores Birdhorse’s belief that wine can (and should) be a vehicle for change.
