Clément Magliocco: Honoring Tradition and Innovation in Valaisan Winemaking

Clément Magliocco comes from a lineage deeply rooted in winemaking, as a third-generation vintner with a family history tracing back to northern Italy. His grandparents, like many Valaisan families, migrated from this region, bringing with them a wealth of agricultural tradition.

In 2016, Clément embarked on his own winemaking journey by acquiring an old Johannisberg vineyard in Chamoson, a picturesque village in the Swiss canton of Valais. Initially, he planned to join his father at Cave Villa Solaris, the family winery. However, those plans shifted when the winery ceased operations, paving the way for Clément to chart his own course.

Expanding with Excellence

When esteemed biodynamic winemaker Marie-Thérèse Chappaz decided to relinquish her lease on a cherished Pinot Noir plot in Chamoson, Clément was entrusted with the land. This larger vineyard, farmed biodynamically for over 20 years, was a natural fit for Clément’s meticulous approach.

In his cellar, Clément focuses on producing a select few cuvées—usually around four—ensuring that each wine receives the care and attention it deserves. His wines are aged on lees, giving them complexity and body, while sulfur use is limited to minimal amounts during bottling, typically around 15 mg/L.

The Pursuit of Natural Winemaking

Clément's commitment to natural winemaking stems from both personal conviction and practical experience. Recognizing the value of investing time and effort in his vineyards, he sought to embrace organic methods as part of his diploma thesis, which explored the transition to sustainable viticulture. Each year, Clément experiments with ways to reduce copper usage, continually expanding his knowledge and refining his practices.

Johannisberg: The Pride of Chamoson

Among Clément’s two vineyard plots, one is dedicated to Johannisberg, a grape that has become synonymous with Chamoson since its cultivation began there in 1862. Also known as Sylvaner, Johannisberg is celebrated for its delicate, aromatic profile and its ability to age gracefully. Today, it stands as the second most prominent white grape variety in Valais, and Clément’s careful stewardship of this heritage reflects his passion for preserving its legacy.

Embracing Organic and Biodynamic Farming

With a deep respect for nature and his Valaisan heritage, Clément is dedicated to organic farming. His vineyard is undergoing the rigorous process of obtaining Bio-Suisse certification, a prestigious standard for organic agriculture in Switzerland. He is also a proud member of the Association Suisse Vin Nature, adopting biodynamic principles to enhance his vineyard's health and vitality.

One of his biodynamic practices includes the use of “501” horn manure preparation, a method that enriches the soil and fosters sustainable growth. Clément's hands-on approach reflects his belief in cultivating a harmonious relationship with the land, a philosophy that has garnered him respect in the winemaking community.

A Vineyard Steeped in History

Clément’s vineyard is a treasure trove of old Sylvaner vines spread across six terraces that cascade down toward Chamoson. The microplots are enchanting, with some as small as 100 vines, pruned into a distinctive “tire-bouchon” or corkscrew style—a hallmark of the Valaisan terroir. These ancient vines not only tell a story of tradition but also produce grapes that embody the unique character of the region.
