Romain des Grottes: An Ethical and Natural Vision of Wine

Established in 2001 in Saint-Étienne-des-Oullières, in the Beaujolais region, Romain des Grottes is on a mission to produce authentic wines, free from industrial standards. Certified organic since its inception and biodynamic from 2006 to 2022, the vineyards are cultivated with unwavering respect for life and biodiversity.

A Philosophy Focused on Nature

Nestled in a granitic terroir, the estate grows much more than vines. Romain and his partner Perrine diversify their production with fruit juices under the brand "L’ANTIDOTE", grains for bread and beer, and medicinal plants distributed by Elixir Lab. Additionally, since 2012, a market gardener has shared their land, creating a true biodynamic garden in the heart of the vineyards.

In the vineyards, no synthetic inputs are used. The focus is on herbal teas and fermented extracts, with minimal use of copper (less than 1 kg/ha/year on average over the last 10 years). The soils, rich in biodiversity thanks to spontaneous and permanent natural ground cover, are carefully maintained. To address climate challenges, such as water retention in sandy soils, Romain innovates by planting hedges and trees, striving to balance ecological respect and economic survival.

Wines Beyond Conventions

The wines of Romain des Grottes are a reflection of his terroir and commitment: 100% fermented grape juice, with no additives or added sulfites. He creates wines that are fresh, tangy, low in alcohol, often sparkling, and suited for any occasion—from aperitif to dessert—as long as you’re in good company.

Always seeking originality, Romain experiments with unique co-fermentations using fruits like apples and raspberries, and even beer. His “out-of-the-box” wines embody a free and daring spirit, driven by a passion for fruit and vitality.

A Commitment to Sustainability

Beyond wine production, Romain des Grottes is deeply committed to biodiversity protection and sustainability. Alongside certifications such as AB (by ECOCERT FR-BIO 01) and Nature & Progrès, he continually reflects on improving the ecological impact of his practices.
