Domaine Ratapoil: A Jura Icon

Nestled in the idyllic countryside of Arc-et-Senans, Jura, Domaine Ratapoil has become synonymous with natural winemaking excellence. Founded by Raphaël Monnier, a former history teacher turned winemaker, this domaine is celebrated for producing some of the most sought-after wines in the region.

The Birth of a Passion

Raphaël Monnier’s journey into winemaking began over two decades ago, sparked by his collaboration with Jean-Baptiste Menigoz of Domaine Bottes Rouges on small négociant projects. What started as a passion project blossomed into a full-fledged vocation in 2009 when Raphaël established Domaine Ratapoil. Initially juggling his new venture with teaching, he eventually committed himself entirely to winemaking, leaving his academic career behind.

A Family Affair

The Monnier family home, located just north of Arbois near the Doubs border, serves as the heart of Domaine Ratapoil. Surrounded by some of the most picturesque landscapes in Jura, the cellar is modest but integral, carved into the side of the house. Though its size barely accommodates the barrels, tanks, and amphorae necessary for production, meticulous organization ensures every vintage is handled with care.

The Vineyards

Over the years, Raphaël has meticulously assembled 5 hectares of biodynamic vineyards spread across nearly 20 parcels in the Arbois region. The domaine’s reds come from prized plots such as Les Corvées and En Paradis, where older vines thrive on a mix of clay, limestone, and gravel soils atop blue marl bedrock. He also cultivates an ancient parcel of indigenous red varieties in Buffard. The whites, meanwhile, are sourced from smaller plots across Vadans, each contributing to the domaine's distinctive wines.
