Frey Vineyards – Bio
Frey Vineyards, located in the lush Redwood Valley of Mendocino County, California, is America’s first certified organic winery. Founded in 1980, it remains family-owned and operated, with multiple generations involved in every aspect of the winemaking process. Frey has long stood at the intersection of tradition and innovation, pioneering organic and Biodynamic wine production long before it was widely embraced.
The vineyard and winery are entirely chemical-free, and Frey was also the first in the U.S. to produce wines with no added sulfites. Their approach blends holistic agriculture with a hands-off philosophy in the cellar—resulting in wines that express both varietal character and the living soils from which they come.
Frey’s farming practices follow Biodynamic principles, treating the vineyard as a self-sustaining ecosystem. Cover crops, compost, and livestock all play a role in enriching the soil. This deep respect for the land informs every decision, from grape growing to bottling.
Their wine lineup is broad, including vibrant reds like Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon, crisp whites such as Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, and refreshing rosés. All wines are vegan, gluten-free, and crafted without synthetic additives or preservatives.
Visiting Frey Vineyards
Frey’s original winery and tasting room were lost in the 2017 Redwood Complex Fire, and the family has been working to rebuild ever since. While their new tasting room is not yet open to the public, the winery looks forward to welcoming visitors in the near future.
