Maryse Chatelin – Uchizy
The wife of renowned winemaker Alexandre Jouveaux, Maryse Chatelin, is the creator of a remarkable Bourgogne Pinot Noir. With vibrant fruit, refined tension, and a silky texture, her wine benefits from a touch of aging in the bottle to reach its full expression—a true gem, year after year.
Alexandre Jouveaux and Maryse Chatelin: A Natural Wine Legacy
Alexandre Jouveaux, now a celebrated figure in both natural wine and Bourgogne, settled in the village of Uchizy, north of Mâcon, in the late 1990s while teaching at the local oenology school. In 1999, he acquired a small plot of land and, driven by a sulfite allergy, began crafting wine in the most natural way possible. Today, Alexandre cultivates a few parcels of exceptional old vines, the oldest dating back to 1910, producing wines of unparalleled sincerity and beauty. These limited bottles are highly coveted by enthusiasts around the world.
A few years ago, Maryse Chatelin, a trained oenologist herself, planted Pinot Noir on rosé-hued limestone soils, marking the birth of Domaine Les Fauvettes.
Crafting Rare Finesse at Domaine Les Fauvettes
From her small cellar in Uchizy, nestled in the Mâconnais region, Maryse Chatelin crafts wines of extraordinary elegance. After years of working alongside her husband, Maryse found her own unique space in 2012, planting a parcel of Pinot Noir in an idyllic woodland setting outside the village. The vineyard lies on pure limestone soils, facing east, at an elevation of 300 meters—one of the highest sites in the region. This altitude, a crucial advantage in the face of climate change, creates optimal conditions for vibrant, balanced wines.
Maryse also farms a small parcel of 60-year-old Chardonnay vines in Viré-Clessé. Her approach to viticulture emphasizes biodiversity, with the secluded vineyard alive with flora and fauna.
In the cellar, Maryse’s winemaking is distinguished by her delicate touch. Fermentations are done as infusions, aging occurs in old foudres, and bottling is performed directly from the cask, unfiltered, without any additives.
The result is wines of breathtaking purity—unlike any others found in the Mâconnais.
