Stefano Pescarmona: A Life Rooted in Nature and Wine

"La Natura è la nostra divinità, ci muoviamo meravigliati e rispettosi nell’incanto delle sue trasformazioni, cercando di produrre un vino che sa di magia."

With these words, Stefano Pescarmona encapsulates his deep reverence for nature. For him, winemaking is not just a craft—it is an act of devotion, a commitment to honoring the land and its cycles. His journey in agriculture and biodynamics is a testament to this philosophy, one that continues to shape his approach to viticulture.

From a Broken Moped to a Lifelong Passion

Stefano's love affair with agriculture began unexpectedly in his teenage years. After breaking his moped, he was sent to pick fruit to earn money for repairs. What started as a necessity soon became a passion. He pursued agronomy, deepening his understanding of soil and plants, and later discovered wine and gastronomy through the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo and Slow Food. His studies took him across the world, including an encounter with agroecology in Berkeley, California, where he developed a broader vision for sustainable farming.

A biodynamic agronomist with an unconventional path, Stefano was never simply a farmer—he was a thinker, an innovator, and a passionate advocate for a new way of caring for the land. His work became a mission: to inspire and guide farmers toward sustainable and respectful agricultural practices.

The Birth of a Natural Wine Visionary

Midway through his journey, Stefano found himself standing in a vineyard on a terraced mountain overlooking the sea. This moment, shared with a friend, marked the beginning of an extraordinary adventure: the creation of the first sulfite-free Banyuls, a natural sweet wine from Languedoc-Roussillon, France.

His dream, however, was far from complete. Returning to Italy, he settled in Val d’Enza, Emilia-Romagna, where he established his own farm. Here, he cultivated vineyards biodynamically, working tirelessly to craft wines that carried the magic of their terroir. His bottle-fermented sparkling wines became a reflection of the land’s rich history, a tribute to a place where tradition and nature coexist in harmony.

Val d’Enza: A Land of History and Gastronomy

Val d’Enza is a region of remarkable beauty and cultural significance. Its plains, composed of alluvial and siliceous soils, have long been dedicated to stable meadows and vineyards of local grape varieties. In summer, the cool sea breeze travels across the Apennines, creating an ideal microclimate for winemaking.

This land is deeply tied to Italy’s gastronomic heritage. From the legendary Matilde di Canossa to the artisanal traditions of parmigiano reggiano, traditional balsamic vinegar, and the art of norcineria, the region is a culinary treasure trove. The flavors of tortelli, cappelletti, and gnocco fritto tell the story of centuries-old craftsmanship, the same spirit that Stefano channels into his wines.
