Franz Strohmeier — Natural Winemaker, Weingut Strohmeier
Franz Strohmeier is a pioneering figure in Austria's natural wine scene, crafting expressive, additive-free wines in the heart of West Styria, often called the "Green Heart" of Austria. Alongside his wife Christine, Franz has been producing wines since 2003, focusing on biodynamic practices and minimal intervention to highlight the unique terroir of their vineyards.
🌿 Philosophy & Practices
Strohmeier’s approach is deeply philosophical and rooted in a profound respect for nature. Franz believes in observing and allowing nature to guide the winemaking process, often making decisions that express the terroir in the most natural way. He has been known to experiment with alternative methods, such as using whey instead of copper sulfate to treat his vines, showcasing his commitment to innovative and sustainable practices.
🍇 Vineyards & Terroir
The estate spans approximately 9.5 hectares across vineyards in Bad Gams and Stainz, situated at an elevation of 424 meters above sea level. These vineyards benefit from the unique climatic conditions of the Koralpe mountains, where cool temperatures and varying winds from the Adriatic and even the Sahara influence grape development. The soils are rich in loamy opok, providing a fertile foundation for the vines.
🍷 Winemaking Style
Franz Strohmeier specializes in a diverse range of wines, including Blauer Wildbacher, Sauvignon Blanc, Welschriesling, and PiWi hybrids such as Souvignier Gris, Muscaris, and Bronner. His wines are characterized by purity, complexity, and minimal intervention, with no added sulfites, filtration, or fining. Notable cuvées include the "Trauben, Liebe und Zeit" series, which translates to "Grapes, Love & Time," reflecting the dedication and patience invested in each bottle.
🌱 Biodynamic & Ecological Practices
Embracing biodynamic principles, Strohmeier fosters a holistic approach to viticulture. The vineyards are managed to promote biodiversity and ecological balance, with practices such as minimal pruning and the creation of biotope ponds to support local wildlife. Franz’s philosophy centers on trusting the plants and oneself, allowing nature to dictate the rhythm and needs of the vineyard.
