Titch Hill: A Vision of Sustainable Winemaking in West Sussex

A Collaborative Journey
Titch Hill, nestled in the picturesque South Downs of West Sussex, is the passionate project of Alex Tristram and Sam Bunker. The duo first crossed paths at Plumpton College in 2017, where they both studied winemaking. Alex returned to his family farm after graduation, a property steeped in history and a legacy of environmental restoration, initiated by his uncle in the 1980s. Sam, a local to the area, soon joined Alex to help bring their shared vision to life.

A Holistic Farm
The Titch Hill estate embodies a polycultural approach to agriculture. Spanning 3.5 hectares of vineyard, the land also supports livestock and arable crops, including wheat and barley. Sheep graze among the vines during the winter months, playing a key role in maintaining the vineyard's ecosystem. The farm’s biodiversity is enhanced by hedgerows, permanent grasslands, and small woods, creating an environment where wildlife, including ground-nesting birds like lapwings and corn buntings, can thrive.

A Focus on Sustainability
The vineyard, planted in 2019, is home to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier vines, along with 12 varieties of PIWIs—disease-resistant grape hybrids. These varieties were introduced to minimize chemical inputs and prioritize soil health. The vineyard is currently undergoing organic certification, and Alex and Sam are committed to using only herbal teas with fungicidal properties, alongside minimal amounts of copper and sulfur.

The Impact of the South Downs
Situated on the high chalk slopes of the South Downs and benefiting from a strong coastal influence, the vineyard's terroir is unique. This proximity to the sea imparts a distinct character to the wines, which are crafted with a philosophy of minimal intervention. No additives are used during winemaking, allowing the natural expression of the fruit to shine.

A Memorable First Vintage
The debut vintage is a celebration of Titch Hill’s dedication to their craft. Made primarily from Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, the wines are vibrant, complex, and full of personality. They offer a genuine sense of place, reflecting the chalky soils and meticulous care given to the vines.

A Commitment to Regenerative Farming
Beyond the vineyard, Titch Hill Farm continues to innovate with regenerative farming practices. The farm supports a herd of pedigree Sussex cattle and a growing flock of Sussex Southdown sheep, a breed perfectly suited to vineyard grazing. These initiatives are not only environmentally friendly but also contribute to the long-term health of the farm’s ecosystem.

Titch Hill stands as a testament to the potential of sustainable, holistic farming in the UK. Alex Tristram and Sam Bunker’s commitment to their land, their craft, and their community sets an inspiring example for the future of British winemaking.
