Domaine Ratapoil: Jura's Maverick of Living Wines

Domaine Ratapoil is an iconic and highly sought-after natural wine estate located in the bucolic heart of the Jura region of France, near Arc-et-Senans. The domaine was established in 2009 by Raphaël Monnier, a former history teacher, and his wife Estelle. The name "Ratapoil" is a playful local slang term for an amateur vigneron, a nod to Raphaël's journey from passionate hobbyist to full-time winemaker, challenging traditional norms in the Jura wine world. His commitment to authenticity and innovation has made Ratapoil a standard-bearer for natural winemaking in the region.

Raphaël and Estelle cultivate approximately 5 hectares of vineyards scattered across nearly 20 parcels in the Arbois region, including renowned sites like Les Corvées and En Paradis, and small, old-vine parcels in Buffard and Vadans. Their farming practices are meticulously organic (certified since the domaine's birth in 2009) and integrate biodynamic principles. They prioritize a living soil, brimming with biodiversity, believing this is essential for producing healthy, expressive grapes. They hand-harvest their fruit, and their vineyards host a diverse range of indigenous Jura varieties, including Trousseau, Poulsard (Ploussard), Savagnin, Chardonnay, and even some rare native varietals like Gamay, Gueuche, Petit Béclan, and Mézy.

In the cellar, Raphaël Monnier's winemaking philosophy is rooted in minimal intervention and a deep respect for the terroir. Wines undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts, with no fining or filtration. Crucially, sulfur dioxide (SO2) is very rarely added, and only in minute amounts if absolutely necessary, allowing the wines to express their vibrant, living character. Raphaël's hands-on approach and continuous experimentation are hallmarks of his winemaking; he uses a mix of vessels including stainless steel tanks, oak barrels (kept topped up for whites), and increasingly, clay amphorae for élevage and experimentation with infusion-style macerations. The reds often see semi-carbonic maceration. Despite challenges like frost-prone vintages, his attention to detail and willingness to innovate have garnered a devoted following. For difficult vintages, he also has a négoce label, "Avis de Tempête" (Storm Warning), where he sources grapes from trusted friends in other regions.
